Abstract

The article discusses the harmful effects of mercury and mercury-containing waste on the environment and human health, the actions of the international community in the management of mercury-containing waste and current situation in Kazakhstan on regulation of the problem of mercury contamination. Currently a draft of national standard has developed in the republic, which aims to regulate the safe handling of mercurycontaining waste and to reduce the risk of mercury contamination in Kazakhstan due to the introduction of safe-handling of mercury wastes.
