This article presents an environmental assessment of technogenic waste generated by industrial enterprises in the city of Shymkent, considering its classification and environmental impact. The relevance of the study is driven by industrial growth and increasing waste volumes, which intensify pressure on air, soil, and water resources.
An analysis of industrial enterprises by environmental hazard categories in accordance with the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan was conducted. In addition, the main sources of waste generation, including metallurgical, oil refining, and chemical enterprises, were identified. The characteristics of current and historically accumulated waste were also examined.
Based on field and laboratory investigations, exceedances of pollutant concentrations were identified, confirming environmental risks. In addition, remote sensing data were used to detect unauthorized waste disposal sites.
The findings highlight the need to improve the waste management system and implement environmental monitoring methods to ensure the sustainable development of the region.
